Toxin Takedown!
Cleansing for Better Health

Are You Toxic? To stay healthy and energetic in today’s toxic environment, you need lifestyle habits that minimize your contact with the health-damaging toxins that are so prominent in our industrialized society. Ignoring today’s toxic threats can leave you vulnerable to illness and fatigue, and if you allow your body’s toxic load to grow, it drains your personal energy and compromises your immune protection against disease.

Because of the importance of eliminating toxins, your body devotes a remarkable amount of its resources to coping with these undesirable chemicals. Seven distinct organs and organ systems are designed to filter and remove toxins from the body, and together they are called the seven channels of elimination: the liver, lungs, lymphatic system, kidneys, skin, blood and bowel (or colon).

The Liver
The liver is the body’s primary elimination organ, but poor lifestyle habits such as smoking and alcohol can saddle this detox warrior and prevent it from doing its job effectively. Cleaner lifestyle choices, such as choosing organic foods (grown without pesticides), limiting your alcohol intake and avoiding cigarettes, are better for promoting healthy liver function.

The Lungs
As part of their non-stop duties, your lungs must continually cope with and eliminate airborne bacteria and pollutants. They provide the blood with life-giving oxygen while simultaneously disposing of toxic material. Aerobic exercise helps your lungs function more efficiently.

The Skin
The skin protects the body while at the same time helping to eliminate toxins. When toxins circulate in your blood and are dispersed into the skin, rashes, acne and other conditions often develop. Consequently, cleansing and eliminating toxins also cleanses your skin and helps maintain its healthy structure.

Kidneys
The kidneys clean the blood and help maintain the health of the circulatory system by maintaining the body’s proper balance of fluids. Research shows that when your kidneys are not functioning at their peak, you are at greater risk for heart disease, heart failure, stroke and death. Cranberries and cranberry juice are key dietary elements that help maintain kidney health.

Lymphatic System
The flow of lymph (a bodily fluid made up mainly of white blood cells) helps transport harmful toxins and assures the delivery of beneficial immune cells to the site of infection. The lymphatic system does not have a pump to move lymph as the circulatory system has the heart to move blood. Instead, it relies on muscle movement to keep lymph flowing, which is why regular exercise assures the reliable flow of lymph through the body.

Blood
Blood distributes nutrients, gases and hormones throughout the body and carries waste products to the organs in charge of their disposal. A heart-healthy lifestyle that includes exercise and plenty of high-fiber fruits and vegetables can help keep your circulatory system functioning smoothly. In addition, limiting the amount of saturated fat in your diet can help lower the risk of arterial blockage and support healthy cholesterol levels.

Bowel (Colon)
The colon and liver are often viewed as the two most important channels of elimination. All of the waste products created during digestion end up in the colon. If colon function falters, the toxins in these waste products may be reabsorbed through the colon’s walls during a harmful process known as autointoxication. A high-fiber diet and daily supplementation with probiotics (beneficial bacteria) are crucial for optimum colon function.

Protective Lifestyle Habits
Maintaining an active lifestyle and following a healthy diet full of fiber-rich fruits and vegetables are the most important things you can do to help your body dispose of toxins through its seven channels of elimination. It also helps to avoid the following whenever possible: processed foods, harsh cleaning chemicals, smoking, alcohol, contaminated tap water, and polluted settings can increase your exposure to harmful toxins.

Regular internal cleansing is also essential for healthy detoxification. Look for a natural cleansing formula that incorporates botanicals such as burdock root, sheep sorrel, watercress, rhubarb, kelp, blessed thistle, ginger root, rosehip, hibiscus subdariffa, peppermint, malva leaf and sarsaparilla root. These particular herbs help the body dislodge and excrete toxins.
