Leave it to my friend Suzanne Somers
to make reducing your toxic burden look sexy. In Suzanne’s latest book,
Sexy Forever: How to Fight Fat after 40, already a #1 New York
Times best-seller, she examines the connection between weight gain and toxic
build-up in our bodies. She shows simple ways to limit your exposure to
environmental toxins and provides a 3-step weight loss program that includes
recipes specifically chosen to help aid your body’s natural detoxification
process.
Of course, these concepts are not new to the alternative medicine world. But
what I love about Suzanne is her ability to communicate natural health practices
in a way that’s relatable to the general public … heck, she even makes them
sound downright cool!
If you haven’t had a chance to pick up Suzanne’s book, I urge you to do so. I’m
even interviewed in one of the chapters discussing the connection between gut
health and weight loss. And in the mean time, here are a couple of tips from my
own book, The Detox
Strategy, on how to reduce your toxic burden using my RENEW program:
Reduce. The first step in the RENEW
program involves reducing your exposure to toxins by cleaning your air, water,
food and household. It begins with making gradual changes such as opting for
organic foods, installing air and water filters in your home, and replacing
chemical-laden cleaners and personal care products with safe, natural
alternatives.
Eliminate. The second step in the RENEW
program addresses the toxins that have been accumulating in your body for years.
You will do this by supporting your body’s natural detoxification and
elimination processes with a combination of herbal cleansing formulas, a
high-fiber diet, colon hydrotherapy, saunas and steam baths, and dry skin
brushing
Nourish. Nourishing the body and building
a strong, healthy immune system is also essential for healthy detoxification.
This crucial third step in the RENEW program involves following a well-planned
detoxification diet that includes plenty of healthy organic foods and
replenishing your cells with high-quality natural supplements. When properly
nourished and maintained, the human body has remarkable recuperative powers. For
this reason, supporting your body’s natural cleansing physiology is an essential
part of preserving your overall health.
Energize. The fourth step in the RENEW program is exercise and
relaxation. Whether you enjoy a brisk walk or prefer a more physically demanding
activity such as running or cycling, exercise is one of the greatest ways to
cleanse the body. It is also important to nurture the mind-body connection with
stress-reducing relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga. Remember there
are countless ways to get active and each offers a unique set of benefits
Wellness. The final step in the RENEW
program is wellness, which involves putting together the first four steps and
developing a personal detoxification plan that fits your lifestyle. Keep in
mind, however, that fostering a healthy body is not something you can do with a
single action. Rather, it requires a lasting commitment to your overall
well-being
