Curbing the Candy Craze
‘Tis the
season for sweets and treats, but what to do about all that sugar?
Below are some helpful tips for keeping Halloween healthy.
Make
sure children eat a healthy dinner before trick-or-treating
to reduce unhealthy snacking later. - To help cut back
on the amount of candy your child receives, select only a certain
number of houses to visit and return home once you’ve
reached your goal.
- Encourage children to stay home and
hand out candy instead of going door-to-door for sweets. They
can still wear their costumes to answer the door.
- Resist
the temptation to give kids free reign over their sugary loot.
Instead, allow them a certain amount of sweets each day or
week, and alternate candy with healthier snacks such as fruits,
veggies and nuts.
- Consider donating at least half of
your child’s
candy to a charitable organization such as the Ronald McDonald
House.
- Instead of handing out candy to trick-or-treaters,
offer individual boxes or packets of raisins, nuts, trail mix,
natural fruit snacks or even organic chocolates to reinforce
that sweets can be healthy too!
